Designing Playgrounds: Balancing Safety, Creativity, and Innovation

As a playground equipment designer at Guangzhou OLEAO Amusement Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd, I have been fortunate enough to work on a wide variety of projects. Every design challenge brings me fun and obstacles, and most importantly, it's a learning process. OLEAO has allowed me to hone both my technical and creative skills. In this post, I'd like to share my personal insights into the design philosophy that shapes every playground I design - whether it's an indoor soft play area for an early education centre, a ninja class for fitness enthusiasts or an outdoor space that fosters a sense of adventure.

1. Safety is the foundation of all design

The first and most important element of OLEAO playground design is safety. As a designer, I understand the importance of creating a play environment that is free from unnecessary risks for children. I strictly adhere to the OLEAO R&D safety standards and refer to guidelines such as ASTM, EN and ISO to ensure that every piece of equipment I design passes rigorous safety tests. This not only ensures compliance, but also gives parents and facility managers peace of mind.

For example, in OLEAO's indoor soft play equipment, I make sure that all edges are rounded, the padding is thick, and the materials used are non-toxic and non-allergenic. These details may seem small, but they are critical to preventing injuries such as falls or impacts that are common in playgrounds. In addition, each new design is subject to safety certifications to confirm that it meets local and international standards. I am very pleased with the fact that these measures both directly protect children and allow them to freely explore their surroundings.

2. The art of balancing creativity and functionality

While safety is the cornerstone, creativity is what makes a playground truly memorable. A playground is not only about the physical structure, but also about stimulating the imagination. Every child who steps into an OLEAO playground should feel like they are entering a world of endless possibilities. In order to do this, I try to think like a child during the design phase, blending the excitement of play with educational elements.

Take the Ninja course I recently designed. Although the main function of the course is to encourage physical activity, I injected bright colours, unusual shapes and a storyline that encouraged children to take on imaginary roles - ninjas, explorers, superheroes - to further enhance their experience. The incorporation of elements such as tunnels, climbing walls and trampolines create layers of complexity that engage children not only physically, but also mentally.

Inspiration often comes from the most unlikely places. My love of architecture and nature often influences my designs. I might mimic the clean lines of a modern building or the organic curves of a mountain in a climbing frame, blending aesthetics with practicality.

3. Innovation through customisation

One of the things I'm most proud of is our ability to customise equipment to suit the unique needs of each OLEAO client. Every playground we design has a distinct character, as no two spaces or customer requirements are the same. This is where we at OLEAO really excel. We have the flexibility to customise designs to suit different layouts, user groups and themes.

For example, when OLEAO works with early learning centres or kindergartens, the equipment is often focused on promoting cognitive development. This may include interactive game boards, tactile walls or educational games embedded in playground structures. For more fitness-focused designs like ninja classes, the emphasis is on agility, balance and strength training, while making the equipment accessible to people of all ages.

Each project begins with an in-depth consultation where we gather information about the client's goals, target users and specific environment. Based on this information, I create 3D models and CAD drawings to reflect the technical and creative aspects of the project. After receiving feedback, we at OLEAO refine these designs to meet aesthetic and practical needs and ensure visual consistency.

4. Material selection and sustainability

Another important part of my design philosophy is the choice of materials. In this day and age, sustainability is no longer optional, it is mandatory. I am passionate about finding materials that are not only durable but also environmentally friendly. Recyclable plastics, sustainably sourced wood and safe, non-toxic paints are often used in our equipment. In addition, many of OLEAO's products are designed with modularity in mind, meaning they can be easily disassembled, moved and reassembled, reducing waste in the long term.

It's not enough for playground equipment to look good, it must also be durable. I carry out detailed material analyses during the design process to ensure that each piece will stand up to the wear and tear of years of use. I also consider the climate of the installation site. For example, equipment designed for outdoor spaces in hot climates needs to be UV-resistant and fade-resistant, while materials designed for indoor spaces must be mould- and moisture-resistant.

5. Play Testing: An Essential Step in the Design Process

A playground design is not complete until it has been tested by actual users. Playtesting is an important step in refining the design. After completing the prototype design, I would definitely observe children's interaction with the equipment to identify potential design flaws or areas for improvement.

I clearly remember playtesting a set of volcano slides. Initially, we designed the slopes to be steeper, thinking it would be more exciting. However, during the test, we noticed younger children hesitating at the top of the slope, unsure of their speed. After observing this, our OLEAO team adjusted the angle to make the slide safer and more suitable for children of all ages. This iterative process ensured that the final product was not only fun, but also easy to use and safe.

6. Emotional Connection: Playgrounds as Social Spaces

One of the most rewarding things about being a playground designer is seeing how our work becomes a social hub. Playgrounds are places where friendships are made and where children learn to share, compete and co-operate. A well-designed playground is more than just a place to burn off energy; it's a space where social and emotional development occurs organically.

When designing, I always keep the importance of socialising in mind. Whether it's designing seating areas for parents or creating open spaces for children to interact freely, every choice I make aims to promote communication and collaboration. In this way, OLEAO playgrounds promote not only physical development but also emotional well-being, making them an integral part of every child's development.

7. Future innovations: integrating technology into playgrounds

Looking to the future, I believe that integrating technology into playgrounds will open up even more possibilities for innovative design. Interactive game panels, augmented reality experiences and sensor-based games are just some of the features we are exploring. However, the key challenge is to ensure that technology enhances play without overshadowing it. I strongly believe that technology should complement physical activity, not replace it.

For example, interactive panels can develop children's motor skills by encouraging them to engage in sporting challenges, while augmented reality can be used to create immersive storylines around equipment, allowing children to become part of the story as they climb, slide or swing.

Designing playground equipment isn't just a profession, it's a passion. From ensuring safety to fostering creativity, the work we do at OLEAO shapes the experiences of children around the world. It's incredibly gratifying to know that every design I create helps to create spaces where children learn, grow and thrive. As a designer, I am committed to pushing the boundaries of playground design while prioritising safety, sustainability and innovation.

I hope that an insight into my design process will give you a deeper understanding of the thought and care that goes into every piece of playground equipment we design at OLEAO. Whether you are a parent, facility owner, or fellow designer, I invite you to share in the joy of bringing you safe, imaginative, and innovative play spaces.
